Velocity of Books Program / Book Exchange - Free Books

I've been working on teaching schools to get book donations from their school communities.

Over the last year, my son's and I have been successful in collecting 13,000 books.  About 10,000 came from our own collection efforts from non-profit organizations.

Once collected, we organize the books between fiction, non-fiction, chapter books, new reader... The teachers bring the students through the display area to select a book that they may take home and keep.

We are working on setting up bookshelves where there can be ongoing book exchanges.  The students can stop by any time they like and exchange a book.

Since I started this program, my sons have had fairly constant access to books of interest.  They are now 7&9 years old.  They read an average of 90 minutes outside of school on school days and 180 minutes a day on weekends.  All of this occurs with little or no prompting.

I have adult children and was not a formal educator.  I didn't know the value of constant access to books of interest.

We are looking to hear from teachers as to whether or not your schools have had similar programs and what you've found successful.

To date, my sons and I have collected and distributed over 33,000 books in all.

I'm finding increasly difficult to get the community to part with unwanted books. There are some non-profit organizations which are better know, such as The Friends of The Library of Montgomery County, Maryland which are posting notes on their doors stating that they aren't taking any more donations.  The director told me that they are simply out of space for books.

In the interim, there are people who desperately need the books.  Many children don't have a single book at home.
