What activity did you select to use for your global assignment? For this assignment I decided to use ePals. I teach an SEL class that only consists of 4 students. I thought this would be a fun way for them to learn about other countries and work with technology.

Describe the activity: This project lasted a total of 8 weeks. I started it with a writing prompt where the students told me what country they would like to visit and why. I then assisted them with setting up ePal accounts and helping them make contact with a student from the country they had told me about. Over the next 6 weeks the students shared information with their ePal buddy, They were required to keep a journal of the information and record it in a venn diagram that would help them compare and contrast their life to their ePal buddy. The students took a quiz about the country before collaborating with their ePal buddy and after. For the final project they were required to put together a PowerPoint and present it to the class.

Describe how the lesson is considered global awareness: The students in my classroom will probably never leave the state of Delaware. They come from very low income families and have struggling behaviors. This provided them the opportunity to see how students in another country live, receive education and what types of environments they live in.

Describe how you incorporate that activity into your classroom: This assignment was linked to out Reading lessons. They were required to keep a journal and venn diagram. Compare and Contrast is a skill that is taught in our reading curriculum and this helped them learn how to do it. The venn diagram along with the PowerPoint helped them to use organizational skills to produce a project.

This is a great lesson for your students.  I really like that you give low-income students the opportunity to experience other cultures within the walls of your classroom.  This could be a lesson where students will bring this home and continue ot explore and learn more (of course with access to the tools).  Great explanation.

I really like the idea of using a venn diagram for this lesson in order for your students to visually compare and contrast information about countries. I especially like this lesson for students who may not have a chance to travel and experience a different culture first-hand. This lesson seems like it would be a great learning experience even more so if students shared their findings with the class and/or families. Nice lesson idea:)

I love how you allowed the students to pick their own country. I'm sure it made it all the more interesting to choose a country they were really interested in. It also allows for great collaboration at the end of the project. The students are able to learn about more than one country and were able to explore many cultures through listening to their classmates present.

I think this is a great project, although it is a herculean task to keep up for 8 weeks. Getting your students exposure to the outside world is a great idea, especially when most of the student population will never leave their particular county. It is truly unfortunate that these issues do arise, but I feel that this assignment is a great way of trying to combat that issue. Having them communicate with individuals from other countries will be great in the fact that they will have to use alternative means of communication. Great assignment.
