This was my third graders first attempt at time lapse photography. It took over two hours to melt but only 30 seconds to refreeze by reversing the film. No we didn't eat the Sundae but we did have ice cream sandwiches to celebrate our success. http://thebrainwaves.us

I can think of all kinds of learning to be had. Estimation and prediction and attendant record keeping to start - Third graders could practice measuring time and perception of time. Maybe use a control (twin) ice cream sundae to measure core and surface temperatures, graph the results. Design experiments using a comparison sundae with different qualities. Learn observational drawing to make a flip book that operates like the time lapse film.
