My name is Rebekah and I teach High School Language Arts in an alternative high school. My classroom is geared towards students who are reading at a middle school level, but are between the ages of 16-21. These students need to bring their reading level up to a high school level as quickly as possible so that they can be successful in some type of high school completion program. We prepare students for credit recovery classes, online classes, and the GED. Some of the students ultimately end up going back to their neighborhood high school as well.

I use a combination of programs to quickly bring reading levels up to high school levels. The basis for my program is the Read180 program. I have modified it to work with what my students need. I also use blogs as a writing tool. Every day there is a silent reading component, writing practice, vocabulary work, and modeled reading.

For the most part, students make very quick progress by focusing on literacy like this for 90 minutes a day. Although there is no assigned homework, they can do extra reading at home (which many choose to do) or they can take home reading packets which teach literary terms and how to read poetry, business documents etc.

I would love to connect with any teachers who are teaching at alternative schools or teachers who focus on reading at the secondary level. Feel free to contact me if you have suggestions or questions about my work. Thanks!
