FIREWALL

   INTRODUCTION

  • Firewall is Used to prevent unauthorised  programs or internet users from accessing a private network and/or a single computer.
  • It is hardware ,software or a combination of both
    • Hardware Firewalls

Protect and entire network.

Implemented on the router level.

Usually more expensive, harder to configure.

  • Ø  Software Firewalls

   Protect a single computer.

Usually less expensive, easier to configure.

HOW DOES A SOFTWARE FIREWALL WORK

Inspects  each individual “packet”of data as it arrives at either side of the firewall.

Determine whether it should be allowed to pass through or it should be blocked.

   FIREWALL RULES

  • Ø  Allow- traffic that follows automatically because it has been deemed.
  • Ø  Block-traffic that is blocked because it has been deemed dangerous to computer.
  • Ø  Ask-ask the user  whether the traffic is allow to pass or not.

  DRAWBACK OF FIREWALL

Can’t protect against connection that don’t go through it.

Can’t protect against completely new threats.

Can’t protect against viruses.

   CONCLUTION

Thus a firewall is a network security system that controls the incoming and outgoing network traffic based       on an applied rule set.
