DESCRIPTION: The Video blog experiment

Version 1.0, October 18, 2007

Skärgårdsstadsskolan, Åkersberga, Sweden

The video blog experiment was born in October 2007 after a couple of days of thinking and planning. My first idea was to start a written student blog, but when I came across the webservice kyte.tv, plans were quickly changed. Or developped, if you wish. Kyte.tv offers a user friendly video broadcasting service with many functions that is very suitable for E-learning and online lecturing. Teachers can record voice and video and broadcast to a specific channel, in various length, and students can participate by watching, chatting or recording themselves.

I have chosen one class of 27 fifteen year old students to participate in this experiment. To begin with we will produce one or two 5-8 minutes long shows where we introduce ourselves, our school and the Swedish school system. After approved by the principal and the rest of the staff, we intend to carry out the experiment fully. The students will be devided into groups of four students in each group and they will work on one show each i.e. researching, rehearsing and performing in front of a camera. Preperation is vital since the shows will be filmed in one shot without editing.

In order to cary out this experiement there are many things that need to be taken into concideration. There are laws that we need to take into account when it comes to have under-aged children published on the Internet and also, this experiment must not affect the student’s education in any way. It is vital that the experiment give the same ammount of education that the students should gain under normal lessons. To be able to do this, I will give my students a contract that needs to be signed by the principal and the students’ parents, to be certain that they understand and understand the responsibility they must undertake.

The aim with this epxeriment is to find new ways to teach. Using video as a medium have many advantages when working with students who have issues in reading and writing and/or dyslexia. It is also a tool that the teacher can use to be able to aid and support the students even outside the classroom. A second aim is to make international relationships and use these in our teaching. A third aim is to promote and show the Swedish school system and youth culture.

Please contact me if you have any ideas or questions regarding my experiement.
