I picked up this item in my 'gator from Doc Searls.

For those who thought that blogging was something new, ten years ago today, Dave Winer started blogging.

Despite the date today, I believe this is the real birthday of blogs.

Some will dispute this -- there's no acknowledgement of Dave Winer in the Wikipedia entry, for example -- but the key element of modern blogging is the RSS feed. Without the feed, it's just another website. While there were other syndication formats, it seems clear that RSS was the catalyst and Winer was instrumental in developing the RSS specificiation.

So, thanks, Dave and happy birthday, blogs.

(I'd sing Happy Birthday, but it's copyrighted and I don't wanna pay the royalties on it.)

For extra credit points: What's the birthday of Podcasting?

It MIGHT well be... If so, it's pretty elaborate but I wouldnt rule out the possibility that I got taken in ..

Dave IS the Father of RSS tho ... and it's about the right time frame.

Answer to the question: September 2004.

Dave Winer and Adam Curry (yea, that Adam Curry) established the first system to accomplish automated distribution of media via RSS enclosures. The term PODCAST was coined a few weeks later.

Fun Fact: In the two and a half years (roughly) since the podcast was established, more than 30,000 podcasts have been created.

Thanks again, Dave. And Adam, too.
