Open Online Experience

This year has been the year of MOOCs for me, and it seems the rest of the world. I started with DNLE at Stanford, the first MOOC I actually finished. (My first MOOC was edfutures with Dave Cormier in 2010 but I kind of petered out after 6 weeks)

In September I started working with Alec Couros and his many co-conspirator on #…

First Class Review - 28 Aug 2012

As an educator, it's important to be reflective of my practice, not for the sake of boasting, but for the sake of being able to recall what went well, what worked - and definitely how things could be improved for the next time I teach this particular session of CPED2023 for Johnson University.

I spend what my wife probably thinks is an inordinate amount of time pining over and re-examining my course content, flow and learning…

Using Technology to Teach Language Arts

Today in class, I guided students through the steps of creating their own introductory wikipage for my Language Arts class. On this page, they included a welcome greeting using a “cool” text generator, uploaded a favorite picture using Morguefile.com, and added a favorite quote from a quotation site. These pages will be linked from a Student Pages site on our class wiki, and students will be responsible for maintaining them throughout…

ideas for grade 4 math and technology

Hello,
I'm a grade 4 teacher in BC, Canada, and I'm enrolled in a post-grad. program in integrating technology in teaching. I am looking for ideas to integrate technology into math lessons (starting with whole numbers to 10 000 and addition to 10 000,) in order to better engage students in the lessons and increase their understanding of these concepts. Any ideas for sites, free programs, or lessons themselves will be appreciated. Thank you!

Barriers to technology integration: Hello! It's NOT always the teacher!

I recently posted about a classroom teacher's story about barriers to technology integration in her history class, a "classroom for the future" http://bit.ly/9HMf9Y From my post, you can link directly to the teacher's M.Ed. thesis, which provides a good first-person insight about the barriers she faced in her attempts to effectively integrate a rich assortment of technology in her classroom.

Here is just one the examples from the…

Are You a 21st Century Learner?

Every day I walk down the hallway to my office and see a black and white poster that reads,

“The illiterate of the 21st century

will not be those who cannot read

and write, but those who cannot

learn, unlearn, and relearn."

Alvin Toffler

To me, this statement gets to the core of what needs to change in education today. We cannot teach if we ourselves are not 21st century learners. Teacher’s first need to learn with today’s technology. They need to… Continue

Changing with the times..my thoughts on classroom technology

It has been said that, “the only constant is change itself.” Though difficult at times, we know that change breeds growth, a necessary part of life.

As teaching veteran with a quarter of a century's experience, I can say without hesitation that I have seen technology “change the face of education.” Literally amazed at times, I have watched in awe, as technology transformed the dynamic of my classroom in the most profound way. Through hard work, professional readings, and the… Continue

Feedback on Pillars of Technology Integration

What are the key elements required for a transformation of teaching and learning through the use of technology? There are obviously many reasonable ways to look at this. From what position do you view this issue? Are you a teacher, instructional coach, building principal, technology facilitator, director of technology, chief administrative officer of some flavor, superintendent, parent, or student? For you, this issue will likely run through the… Continue

ICE Conference 2009

During this approaching week, the Illinois Computing Educators Conference, the big Midwest tech conference for teachers, administrators, technologists, and tech vendors will be taking place at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles, IL. I've attended this conference for the past 5 years, last year being the exception, when I was back in the classroom and very much out of the tech loop. This is a 4 day event, but Thursday and… Continue

Technology in education-How far are we?

Cross posted on educatorslog.in

Its a tech world now. We are all trapped in this heavily wired world (now getting wireless). At homes, at workplaces, be it anywhere, its technology all the way. In education, its essentially the computer when we talk of technology in education. Information is just a click away, so why not make the most of it? In the classrooms, instruction for all subjects integrating the computer still needs to be put together by the… Continue
