Continue

YOU DID WHAT...? Accidents Gone Good - A Lesson From Charlie Hutton

It is funny how some things happen in life. For instance, do you remember the commercial where these people were at the movie theater and someone drops their chocolate bar in someone else's peanut butter? The point the commercial was implying is that Reese's was discovered by an accident. If you don't remember, I included a video of the commercial below.

The reason I bring this up is because Charlie Hutton from the television…

Classroom 2.0 Live - learning on a Saturday afternoon

I just participated in a Classroom 2.0 live event on Elluminate. The special guest was Terry Freedman, talking about using Web 2.0 tools in the classroom. It was a great session with lot of links to resources that I am eager to investigate. There were over 96 participants from all over the world joining it. The chat was great although, at times, I lost what Terry was saying while I was typing responses. That is why the archived streams are such a valuable asset.

I am continually amazed by… Continue

Blended Learning Boosts Achievement

A recent study conducted by the U.S. Department of Education found that students involved in blended learning programs generally performed better than students who participated in face-to-face instruction. Watch What You Tweet!!

So people are now being sued for libel based on the content of their tweets. And while the courts are struggling to keep up with technology -- and how free speech plays out in evolving social networking mediums -- there is a lesson for all to be learned, I believe, in the idea that "slander is slander".

This article raises some interesting ideas. Worth a read.

A quality… Continue

All FIRED UP for NCTE in Philly!

I am all FIRED UP for Philly! The truth is, I just love NCTE. It's simply a home-run experience every time I attend the annual conference and I always leave a better teacher as a result of having made the trip.

Why? The people. It's that simple.

NCTE provides me a chance to be in the same room with some of the best minds in the world of English Language Arts. I mean where else can you go to hear Carol Jago, Kylene Beers, Jim Burke, and on and on and on and on?… Continue

At what point does it simply cost a kid 7 "mow-the-lawns" for an Algebra I credit?

So when I read a story like this, about how students who have repeatedly struggled with a "core class at school" (i.e. they didn't pass) being able to use computers for credit recovery so that they can graduate, I like the idea.

And I do believe that there is a place and space in public education to address this need in this type of… Continue
