Sys Admin Hat:
I am responsible for 2100+ Windows, 1000+ OS X computers using AD and OD for authentication. I am the architect of the AD environment and assisted with the clean up of the OD environment. I was the primary architect of the OD/AD pilot that is currently used at four of our nine buildings to authenticate OS X users to AD but manage the computers via OD.
Programmer Hat:
I use C#, ASP.Net, Python, Apple Script, Bash Script and Lotus Notes to create applications. The applications I have created include a help desk, a student - parent feedback application that automatically emailed parents weekly reports from teachers and saved those reports in a database, an OS X application that mounted SMB shares on 10.4 and 10.5 clients based on a users group membership, a utility for importing AD users that joins the users to groups and creates their home directories, and a software inventory program that tracked licenses and usage (grade level and subject) per software title.
Security Hat:
I also actively monitor 30+ servers for security issues and do periodic scans of my VLANs for unusual activity and open ports.
Back-up Hat:
I am responsible for the backup of all data and end user files in the district on the Windows platform.
Database Admin Hat:
I maintain three SQL servers and have designed several SQL databases for use in applications.
Email Admin Hat:
I run an Exchange 2007 server for students
You mentioned finding opinions from China, France & Germany. I've been looking at Peoples Daily-pretty communist & not representive of the real public. Any suggestions for neutral or freelance newpapers since you mention bbc is too close to American.
Sherri and I work together- we just happened to be on the forum the same night, but she's more articulate than I am! We are looking for some way to distinguish purchased software from web tools- it seems we run into communication problems when we try to converse with the tech facilitators about web tools. I think the comment posted later that tech people consider web tools software too helped us understand why we were having communication issues. We continue to have discussions about trying to make sure we provide the tools the teachers need without subjecting them to approval processes that could potentially slow access down especially if we are assured the site is educationally sound and safe. Apparently this is a discussion many educators are having around the country, so we're not alone. Thanks for your comments and help.
The Ubuntu Community Learning Project is just getting off the ground. We have approval to continue the project from Canonical and will use the learn.ubuntu.com sub-domain. We are currently looking for curriculum writers with Moodle experience who would be interested in assisting the community effort.
