Profile Information

School / Work Affiliation
System Administrator for a K-12 School District
About Me
A Digital Native in his 40s

Sys Admin Hat:
I am responsible for 2100+ Windows, 1000+ OS X computers using AD and OD for authentication. I am the architect of the AD environment and assisted with the clean up of the OD environment. I was the primary architect of the OD/AD environment that is currently used with all faculty OS X computers and roughly 50% of the student OS X computers. I also implemented ESXi this year.

Programmer Hat:
I use C#, ASP.Net, Python, Apple Script, Bash Script and Lotus Notes to create applications. The applications I have created include a help desk, a student - parent feedback application that automatically emailed parents weekly reports from teachers and saved those reports in a database, an OS X application that mounted SMB shares on 10.4 and 10.5 clients based on a users group membership, a utility for importing AD users that joins the users to groups and creates their home directories, and a software inventory program that tracked licenses and usage (grade level and subject) per software title.

Security Hat:
I also actively monitor 30+ servers for security issues and do periodic scans of my VLANs for unusual activity and open ports. (nmap is a wonderful tool)

Back-up Hat:
I am responsible for the backup of all data and end user files in the district on the Windows platform. My district just migrated from a traditional tape library to a Virtual Tape Library (VTL) which includes data de-duplication.

Database Admin Hat:
I maintain three SQL servers and have designed several SQL databases for use in applications.

Email Admin Hat:
My district migrated to Exchange 2007 this year and I am one of two systems administrators maintaining the system.

Education Advocate:
I am currently involved in trying to push computer science, including programming, out of being an elective and in to the core curriculum. I firmly believe that computers and computer science have become so intertwined with future jobs that we must give the topics the same treatment we do math and science.

I am sure I have forgotten something...

Hello Indigo,
Sorry that my reply was long in coming. My fifth grade class has been keeping me very busy. You are welcome to use my site for your presentation. I would enjoy contributing to the Edubuntu project. What are ways that I can contribute?

Thanks for your question. I use the following simplified definitions:
Digital native: a person who has grown up with digital technologies
Digital immigrant: a person who is adapting to digital technologies

I don't think there is any value in arguing over an age break or exact definition. There are certainly digital immigrants who have adapted and acquired more digital knowledge and skill than many natives. I don't apply any negative connotation to the term digital immigrant, just as I wouldn't apply any negative connotation to a geographical immigrant.

Thanks. I have been lurking for about an hour here putting off organizing some materials for an Elluminate webinar I have to do next week. I have been browsing through some of the great videos and adding some of the weblinks to my delicious account.

Thanks Indigo, I'm looking forward to some interesting discussions - already had one on Elluminate (which we are looking to use with UK schools)

I had never heard of Lychrel numbers before you asked, but they sound interesting! I like knowing things like that exist, because it's another way to motivate my own students, particularly those who show interest in programming. I don't teach any programming, although I am using iTunes U to learn a little more about it myself. Maybe in the future. :)

We have block scheduling where I teach. I see each group two times a week for 90 minutes then once for 45 minutes. I want to use that 45 minute period to link technology and ss together. I want the kids to make wikis, podcasts, etc. I am not exactly sure how to make these things myself. Any suggestions on mini technology assignments I can do in 45 minutes til I get a better understanding? Thanks!

Ha! Because the radio came on at the same time as your video I thought you were advertising for KTLF (keeping the Lord first)!

Professional Development for K-12 Tech Staff

Districts take great care to ensure that administrators and teachers get professional development, but I do not see the same opportunity for K-12 technical staff members. I wonder if this is isolated to my area or widespread. I also do not know of any organizations that 'embrace' K-12 technical staff. The organizations I am familiar with only have groups for teachers, instructional technology specialists and coordinators/directors. In other industries technical staff are expected to understand t… Continue

Life of a Systems Administrator: Struggling with HP Support

Today I spent 10.5 hours struggling with a VLS (Virtual Tape Library System) from HP. It fails to load the 'latest' firmware and 'data dedpulication'. I did research last night and found four articles on how to 'load' all the patches. I followed each of them -- and made one version of my own after the other four failed. Then I called HP Tech Support who wanted me to follow one of the four again -- and then capture the 'trouble ticket package'.

I did... and it did not work again.

This time I ca… Continue
