Summer School is in Session!

Posted on June 7, 2007 at 12:37pm 0 Comments

I'm beginning my summer by teaching Economics. The students aren't quite what was expected but they are proving to be highly motivated and eager to please. They're also soooo used to being spoon fed notes and filling out worksheets. I refuse to do that with them (to them!) It is a bit of a struggle to move them from their comfort zone, but how can I not teach seniors in high shcool through technology? I've set up an account on Nicenet. I do A LOT with the discussion boards and am glad to see… Continue

Pondering

I've been stuck on one simple question that was asked of me lately: What technology at your school has had the most impact on student acheivement? Not a good question to ask of someone working with a staff that is still resisting technology. . . I suppose our online learning environment has been effective, I can't really say what else. Someone suggested graphing calculators. Sure would be interesting to hear what others have found effective and what the indicators would be.

I jusr read this over at Librarian in Black.

"It's long been an irritation to me that libraries have summer reading clubs. I want a library to have a summer non-reading club. You'd get

points for using the various services and resources the library

provides that don't deal with reading. You could combine the two and

just call it the Summer Library Club. Some points for… Continue

Hi Edi,
How exciting that you'll be traveling to and teaching in Taiwan. I look forward to reading about your experiences there. Thanks for asking me to be your friend. I'm a librarian, too, so I just joined the Librarian group.

Hi Edi,
Yes I have read aome good books, some Swedish that I don't think are translated. One of those I read is a reflection on Sonia's benevolence in Crime and Punishment.

Hi Edi,
Maybe we more life-experienced human beings can slow down the fast discussions a little around here so that some perspective can be added. Glad you're here and hope we can share some thoughts about where education of children is head.

Hi Edit,
My research it´s an action-research-colaborative with teachers in continuous formation and pedagogues in initial formation. We will try to constitute one Digital Comunitary Radio. The copyright, prodution and delivery made by students with teacher supervision. We have five groups work on it. They will try to produce an Talk and show about "alimentar troubles", "historic" soapopera, Brasilian folk music roots, local journal and an female variety show (with recipes, sentimental journey, basic notions about care yourself, etc)...

All shows work on interdisciplinary student content and personal values, trying to give voice for the students on their community.

(sorry my claudicant english...)

Yes we do! This is the second year and we have tremendous support from Administration. This is not to say we have not had issues! We have learned some valuable lessons (like using false identities for students), but the large majority of teachers who have used blogging effectively feel strongly that this is a super way to get kids to "THINK" and "RESPOND" with their own thoughts in their own words. We will continue to use WEB 2.0 to pursue student voices.
