Three Channels = One Exciting Classroom

This week we tried an experiment in class that I will DEFINITELY repeat. We watched the video 'Aftermath - Population Zero' by National Geographic as part of our Stewardship Character Ed program. It is a compelling movie about what would happen to the world without humans. While we watched we had our entire class logged into a chat room in our district's First Class network. The students each have a netbook and angled their desks such that the movie screen was just above their computer monitor.…See More

What is an 'IBM'?

I teach in a classroom in which each student has their own netbook and we are wired for internet. It is a great place for both myself and the kids to learn a LOT! The netbooks have become a tool that the kids pick up the same way they do pencil crayons or calculators. I rarely tell that what program they need to use to complete assignments as they all have their favourites. Often there will be some students creating slideshows, some creating photo essays, some creating video clips ... they can…See More

About Me
I am a teacher of a combined grades intermediate classroom in rural Ontario, Canada. I teach in a room where each student has a netbook and we also have access to a group of 12 ipads. I am delighted with the opportunity to teach in a 'digital classroom' and I'm thoroughly enjoying learning with my students about the may ways to learn and communicate using Web 2.0 tools.

Flipped Classroom Canadian Video Resources

I have read, with a great deal of interest, many blog posts this past month on the 'flipped classroom'. I love the idea of having even more opportunities to turn my class into one that allows me to be the 'guide on the side'. It is an excellent way to vary methods and assignments to students with different ability levels and different interests. As I've tried out a number of approaches I have been searching for a way to bring this style of learning to my grade eight history classes. Although…

We're Teaching Teachers?

Yesterday our class invited ten teachers from our district to come for an afternoon carousel of technology in the classroom ideas. I have run workshops numerous times in the past but this one was particularly interesting for me. The students had practiced their presentations. They had exciting projects and tools they wanted…

On to iPad2

Through a grant for a pilot project in our District my students and I have just received 12 iPads to use in class. I have had my own iPad for two years now and use it all day long. I'm excited to learn about how to design activities for student use. My first step has to be to create an educational account to purchase apps. I hadn't realized that when you have an iTunes account you can only purchase an app once as an individual. I will need an educational account to buy group licences. Our…

Hi Wendy! I am amazed at what tool you have in your classroom. Wish I could say the same. I do not know if you teach science but please pass this on to your science colleagues at all levels. I was on a 7 hour sciCON on January 9 and it was all worth participating. Being able to travel without moving is amazing from polar bears in Churchill to Dr. Jane Goodhall in Africa and so much more. Go to http://community.discoveryeducation.com/ site and look up the different dates.
