A list of truly safe 2.0 tools for students

I created PikiFriends (www.pikifriends.net) because several years ago there weren't any SNS platforms out there which were safe enough and easy enough to use with my EFL jr/sr high school students.  While there are many teachers out there who are very tech savvy (probably everyone reading this falls into this group), most are not and unknowingly put themselves, their school and their students at risk by using certain tools on the internet. So if you are…See More

Hi Jeff, We would be really interested in conncecting students. However, we are on a countdown to the end of the year as we only have 4 weeks left with exams and reports in between, so if you think we could quickly connect with videoconferencing or other alternatives, let me know. Thanks for the pumpkin pie!

Hi, Jeff. My name is Ken Greene and I am the general music teacher and choir director at Ridgeway Middle School in Memphis, TN. Would you and your students be interested in participating in a classroom cultural exchange with us? My students and I have recently begun connecting with other students and educators around the globe through Classroom 2.0, Voicethread, and Google Video Chat in an effort to strengthen our appreciation for diverse cultures, develop global relationships, and engage in meaningful collaborations.

We are a Title 1 school here in Memphis and the experiences of communicating with other students has been tremendously rewarding for my kids. We have exchanged poetry and short stories with children in Nepal, discovering the country and culture as well as things we have in common with each other. We have explored Switzerland and discovered the alpine horn thanks to a teacher at the International School of Zug and Luzern. We have also learned about the Lakota Sioux culture from students on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

Feel free to visit my Classroom 2.0 page at http://www.classroom20.com/profile/KenGreene as well as our RMS music site and blog, http://web.me.com/knrgreene/RMSMusicMediaNetwork/Welcome.html
. Our blog features news on our "global" efforts. The web site showcases various projects from my students along with information on our programs.

I am interested in learning more about PikiFriends. I have downloaded the "About Me" worksheets and "How to Use PikiFriends" documents. Looks like a great tool for connecting with each other.

I look forward to hearing from you, Jeff. Best Regards! Ken
PS Sorry for the long message ;)

Hi Jeff and welcome to classroom2.0 There are many teachers to meet here and a lot of resources to share.
My students have been looking at the floating worlds block printing from Japan and have made animated stories using some of the characters from the National Gallery of Victoria website. I have read about students in Japan composing stories for mobile phones and thought that would be a great extension for my students to move on into. Do you know anything about these stories? Are there any that we could look at somewhere? Do your students write any of them? Any advice or help would be great.
