Have you checked the Teach Paperless blog (http://teachpaperless.blogspot.com/)? He uses Twitter in his classes (he's got a sidebar section with his Twitter blog posts). Might give you some ideas/insights.

Maybe use a private Ning site. Set up discussion forums with a discussion for each teacher which would allow the teacher and students (and parents?) to dialog and the students could attache files with their responses.
