I'm looking for another Algebra I teacher who would like to collaborate.  I'm teaching my class to make short podcasts to demonstrate the skills they are learning.  Maybe we could have another class view our podcasts and share what they are doing in a similar way?  Another idea would be to share blog entries?  I've done collaborations with other science classes but not other math classes.  Any ideas?

Hi Cathy,

I would love to. I teach at an American international school in Mumbai, India and I have 2 courses of 8th grade Algebra 1. We are a 1 to 1 laptop school so we are pretty advanced in tech abilities and have a lot of experience doing projects online. All my students have blogs on which they post reflections to challenge questions and other things every couple weeks. For the past 2 years I have also had students create tutorial videos on topics and share them in class. This is a fantastic process, and it would be wonderful to share it with someone!

If you're interested, let me know what kinds of resources and tech availability you have and the tech skills your kids are coming in with and we can brainstorm some possible options.

Exciting!

Cool! How did you end up in India? We are a school near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I have 33 kids in the class and they work in groups. We share a 15 laptop cart with the other 8th grade classes. The kids use TI73 and TI84 graphing calculators. To make our videos we are just using Canon Powershot cameras and iMovie. We post on the school podcast server.

What are you using for the blogs? I wanted to try blogging this year but haven't started yet.

Thanks for your interest!

We decided we wanted to live and work abroad and went to an international job fair and now we're here! Can't recommend it enough...international teaching is a fantastic experience.

We use flip cams and screen capture software to make the movies and then we post them via YouTube or on a separate site that we make as a class.

We use www.weebly.com to make websites and they have a blog function in them as well. If you are at all interested in making a website, this is a great way to do it. If you want just a pure blog then I would recommend using blogger. Edublogs are great too depending on what you are looking for.

Why don't we get in touch via email and talk more about when and what. We started the year talking about number sets and doing some review of basic operations (negatives, order of operations, absolute value, inequalities, combining like terms, etc). We are now just beginning to jump into linear equations. We also work with the TI 84 calculators and just started doing some activities to practice entering data and looking at patterns.

Can't wait!
