RTI - extra reading instruction at the expense of other classes?

I know many schools are currently teaching mostly reading and math with very little time alotted for science and social studies. Some others are having kids miss art/PE/music. Our school is beginning to lean this way as we struggle to get our lower students "caught up" before they reach middle school. My question is: does anyone know of any research to show that this is effective?
