What activity did you select to use for your global assignment?

For my global assignment, I chose to select the website entitled Intercultural Global Solutions, found at dfaintercultural.com. On the website there are many cultural quizzes you can take that are extremely informative. They do a great job of giving students or teachers information on exactly how much they know about a particular countries culture. It is pretty astounding once you really sit down and take a few of them. I would bet that most of the population would not know over 25% of a particular cultures nuances. This is a pivotal piece of information to face when combating global awareness, which is why I chose it in particular.

Describe the activity, how will you incorporate it in your class?

Students will pair up in the classroom while wearing their ties. One student will have a cue card that will be able to direct them in conversation while the other student will not use one. The student with the cue card will start normal conversation and then will gradually talk about the ties they are wearing. The cue cards will make the person talk about how they had one just like it and ask them what private school they attended. “Public schools (really private schools) traditionally had school ties that identified their students. If you wear a striped tie, you run the risk of associating yourself with a particular school in Britain” (Dfaintercultural.com) The conversation should turn to confusion and awkwardness for the student without the cue card.

The lesson should then transition to a conversation piece about how they think the conversation is going as a whole. Discussion should bring up the fact that there is confusion and not sure why schools are being mentioned with relationship to the ties. You can the talk about the aforementioned comment on how some ties were directly related to specific private schools in the UK. Teachers should then discuss the importance of global and cultural awareness when it comes with communicating and interacting with other cultures. Lastly, you can create and give a surveymonkey on how they feel they rank on global and cultural awareness. After administering the test on gobal awareness from dfaintercultural.com, assign the students to complete the same survey, and discuss the differences between the two results. Students may choose any culture that they wish in order to complete the assignment.

Describe how the lesson is considered global awareness

The purpose of this artifact is to educate students on the importance and responsibility of being culturally aware. The paper and lesson plan describe why this is such an important issue. In my opinion, the main proponent of this issue is that students and citizens alike are inside their own bubble and have no reason to get out of it. This lack of caring about other’s customs is a true statement as to why Americans as a whole are regarded as ignorant, pompous, and rude in other areas of the world. We simply do not take the time or place much emphasis on learning about other cultures in general. This artifact addresses that issue, making students fully aware of the issue through a mock conversation with each other, and finally a cultural awareness quiz at the end. These activites should make students realize that it is their responsibility in becoming educated about other cultures. This issue is becoming exponentially more important as technology further enhances cheap and effective means of communicating and collaborating all around the world.

James,

Your global awareness activity is very interesting.  Would this be for high school students?  I think that the main ideas that you want students to take from your lesson are very important, and I agree with the sentiment that many of our students live in their own little "bubble".  I think that teaching cultural awareness in school is extremely important so that our students have some exposure to what is outside their bubble before leaving school and entering the real world.  Thanks for sharing the site dfaintercultural.com.  I am going to try some of the quizzes myself!
