I developed a global education lesson for a high school classroom. The lesson involves the students selecting a global issue, researching the issue, communicating with a digital pen pal through epals.com, and then presenting an idea to make the issue better based on what they learned through research and communicating with their digital pen pal. This is more of a project than a lesson. My idea is that the project would take place over the entire school year with the presentations being at the end. I allowed for my students to select a global issue because I want the project to mean something to them, rather then just being another grade to turn in. I would provide a list of different issues currently effecting the world and the students would select from the list. Having this variety would also allows the students to learn about different global issues from the their peers during presentations.

As I have said I would make this project last the entire school year. I would introduce the lesson by discussion what students already know about global issues; if they know anything at all. Then I would have the students select their issue and being their research. My school has computer labs I can sign up for to allow my students access to the internet. I would only provide 45 mins a week to complete the research for the first month. This will allow students to learn some background information and understand more about their global issue. Then the students will select their digital pen pal from epals.com. Through out the year I will sign up for the laptop cart every Friday so when the students need to send a message to their digital pen pal they have access to a computer. I plan to make sure all students have access in school because I know some do not have a computer at home.
