Chapter 12: Humanities Instruction
Humanities Means different things to different people.
Overall Concept: To include a variety of subjects and to incorporate those subjects to fit together. Relate to the human environment Diverse Heritage Traditions, and Human Realtions.
In our lesson we had our students incorporate art, history, literature, and technology together to create a final project. The students would learn about modern art, then research a artist of their choice, record information on that artist, and then be taught how to use Microsoft Publisher to create a magazine cover about their choosen artist.

Choice - Allowing them to choose their own artist. Create their own design for magazine.
Challenge - Discovering which artist relates to them. Designing a magazine cover.
Control - Doing their own research. Controlling the design of their own project
Constructing Meaning - Develop a better understanding of Modern Artist

I teach English Literature in a required two semester program of instruction. We start with Beowulf, move on to The Canterbury Tales, and follow-up with either Hamlet or Macbeth in the first semester. In the second Semester we start with Frankenstein and follow-up up with The Lord of the Flies.
For each text I have an assignment entitled, "The Life and Times of..." In this assignment the students collect and contribute to a catalog of events and important people in the areas of civics, literature, music, engineering and architecture, religion, and sciences. Later, each student will pull from the catalog some elements that can be tied to the literature in some fashion and make a presentation to the class about the interrelationship of the whole.
Students groan at the beginning, but as they see the relationships between the elements that make up the whole of our history, it becomes more interesting to them.
One of the difficulties is teaching discrimination in web research. Our school library media center was closed for economic reasons three years ago and the collection is not available, thus the internet is our only source for research. Choice is important, as is the control of the end process leading to the presentation phase. -
