Great question. I don't have a classroom, but am looking to return to the classroom and anticipate using a variety of Web 2.0 tools with my students. I have been searching recently and am finding many hearing classrooms doing this but have not found any deaf classrooms. I found a resource recently on a hearing post one teacher teaches "netiquette" as an introduction to using Web 2.0 tools. At the end, students sign a contract. I'll see if I can find her power point again, I think I saved it somewhere....sometimes I get so many great sites saved in my favs folder, I can't find them again. However, check www.albion.com/netiquette for a discussion on rules of the road (this is not an education site). Here is another link on using twitter in the classroom (These are hearing teachers, but why not Deaf? Email, text, twitter, blogs etc. has been vital communication link in the Deaf community for years! Our students are already pros!). Look forward to hearing more on this topic.
Oh my appologies, I forgot to enter my last link, I got so excited. SMILE!

This policy could be modified to include twitter....http://arapahoe.littletonpublicschools.net/forStudents/AHSBloggingP...
Have used Twitter at home, but not at school --- mainly because the filters we have in place don't allow me to use it. Hoping that this will change and be ready by fall.

Twitter is a good way to develop a PLN (professional learning network, click here for more info) where you can ask other teachers for ideas for teaching. I'm still learning/figuring out how to use it with students. I'm not even sure at this point if students will have access to Twitter during school hours.
This is a big discussion in general education as well....access. My current working district blocks EVERYTHING. I can't read blogs or twitter, or facebook. And I am not even doing this for the personal social thing, but to access other educators of the deaf which are so far and few between in my area. Yet, I read about how other classrooms are getting their students to blog and twitter etc. The deaf population is so prevelant with social media...always has been. I have had a text pager since the early 1980's! They KNOW how to do this stuff, so why not figure out ways to make it avail in schools to improve English! Duhhh!

On another note. When I was working at the school for the deaf in my last job, we had some great teachers with knowledge and ideas for using technology like online portfolios, class webpages, etc....but the technology department was so against it fearing that some bad filter would come in and wipe out the network. I see the same discussions going on in hearing classrooms, but many schools ARE doing it. We have to fight for our existance.
Ohh, don't worry. I'm doing what I can to get this kind of access for our students. It's not easy, but we do have the right people in place to make it happen. Now we just need to make it happen. Easier said than done, I'm afraid.....

The biggest battle I think with students will be teaching responsible use of the phone, Twitter, blogs, and the like. We are currently revisiting our AUP for this purpose. Kids these days are starting to feel entitled to everything. Today, a student told another teacher, "I don't have to take a final exam because I passed the state SOL." Sorry kid, but not your decision!
Roselle, I found this slide share I thought you would be interested to see. "25 ways to use twitter in the classroom" I know I am going to try some of these great ideas! Hope you are feeling better.
cool link. thanks for sharing, Michelle!

I had students during a practical teaching experience (before I graduated) organising a function/party over twitter with specific roles of caterer, location organiser, invites, decorations. granted it was for a simple activity with 10-12yr olds
