Currently, our school district policy is that students have to have cell phones turned OFF during the school day. I think many districts have this policy.

My middle school students use Poll Everywhere and Wiffiti to participate in class discussions on various technology topics.  It is so exciting to see students that are traditionally reluctant to participate in class become eagerly engaged in class discussions when web 2.0 tools like this are used.

I think Smart Phones will eventually be as integrated as computers.

Check out:http://www.polleverywhere.com/  and try the audience response with your students or colleagues. Paula

I believe that cell phones should be utilized in the higher education setting. There are several educational apps that would beneficial to aiding students in learning. Or you could have students develop apps to make college easier to navigate. What do you all think?

What do you see? I have noticed over the past three years that the number of students carrying around cell phones have decreased and those that students that still have them have "smaller" service plans. Obviouly, I attribute thus to the economy... Anyone else seeing this?

I had an opportunity to sit on a panel this past week about 21st Technology in today's world. The audience was both college students and college professors. I have to be honest it was a challenge listening to their thoughts. They (professors) seemed to blame on problems on technology. I gave example after example how those same problems existed before all the technology arrived in their classrooms. That the problems they pointed out were social problems. I followed up my argument with that we are all educators. Today's students will live in a different world. That we need to educate them on how to use this technology wisely. Whether it was to learn to weed through the mass information to find the true information to when technology should or should not be used in the learning process. They did agree that technology can create excitement in the learning but the excitement comes at a cost. BY the time we were done I THINK my point had settled in. The next step is what do I actual do in my classroom and as a college how can we take a conformed approach to educate our students. But by then time was up. I look forward to hearing what others have to say. Good luck.

Any helpful tips on convincing the College administration that cells phones can be an effective teaching tool?
