I am interested in suggestions for using virtual worlds as a teaching tool. I don't really want to deal with the hassle and costs related to Second Life Teen, and I am thinking about trying There.com. Any thoughts?

You could
(1) Toss up an Opensim Server: http://opensimulator.org

(2) Grab a project I have been working on called Edusim: http://edusim3d.com (built on Cobalt - peer to peer based so no server required)

(3) start a Sun Wonderland Server: https://lg3d-wonderland.dev.java.net/

All these projects are Alpha - but getting better all the time.
