I've been dying to have my class video conference with someone, and just got to thinking that there should be some site or resource where students have the opportunity to talk with our troops overseas. Does anyone know of any way I can make this happen? Any thoughts are helpful.

The easiest thing and least costly would be a double live broadcast via uStream.tv or at least an event where both sides are logged into ustream.tv with video and audio plus co-hosting.

Double broadcast would work like this:

On both sides, the feed from "the other side" would be broadcast on a big screen, while the broadcasting computer is served by a technichian and is silent. You could also embed both streams on a homepage.

I would do this because ustream.tv is free, you can use any old dv cam connected to a computer and connect to any old mixer-mic setup for good quality sound. Be sure to practice a bit beforehand.

See instructions on how to set this up at http://ustream.tv.
I'm a retired teacher heading for Iraq soon. I mobilize next week, and should be in Iraq sometime in early May. I'm planning on using Skype to keep in touch with my friends and family at home. Skype is a free program that you download and install on your computer. Since I have a webcam on my computer, you would be able to see me, and if you had a webcam, I would be able to see you also.
