About Bloom and Marzano:  Their Impact on my Teaching and Learning

In orchestrating a symphony, a game, or a meal the value of the endeavor is only realized after the work has been produced.  As teachers we are orchestrating daily and although we are witness to our work at the end of the lesson; the actual symphony will play itself out years from now.  This when each of our students proceeds to perform what their multiple directors have guide, instructed and hopefully made them understand.  The right or wrong, the good harmony or the bad harmony will be a result of our instruction and influence.

Bloom and Marzano are to me the conduits by which I more fully understand the universal human concept of knowledge and learning.   Bloom puts forth not just a concept but also a framework, which guides the teacher to a better understanding of learning.  Then Marzano and associates relate to the learning by matching processes and techniques that research shows will improve teaching and thereby the students understanding.  Yet as insightful and ingenious as their concepts and techniques are it remains for the teachers and the students to create their symphonies.  These tools, which they afford, are exactly what is needed to help our students and our society succeed.  In using these universal tools, it actually frees the teacher from any set educational paradigm maybe a paradigm that has seen its time.   This same act allows our student the freedom to take these universal concepts and apply them to a future we will not see.  Apply them to a future where the teachers of today are responsible for the student’s entrepreneurship, community spirit, collaborative ability, and communication skills.  These concepts are based on Bloom and Marzano frameworks and will lead our students to create and to success.

This is why I find it essential to apply as much of Bloom and Marzano’s concepts as is possible in today’s classroom.  The tendency will be to make a good lesson plan better, to make a great activity even better and to make an interested student even more engaged.  It is important to be sure also that our material does not become stagnant, boxed in and over structured.  The structure we need to portray is how to learn and how to be free to learn.  I want my students to be able to function in a world where change is a constant but by applying Bloom and Marzano concepts they are able to tame change by finding similarities, by comparing, by testing, by asking questions so on and so on.

I have implemented some of the concepts as I have grown into teaching.  My plan is to implement many more as I continue to grow into this profession.

I see a lot of movement toward more implementation of the higher order thinking concepts from my peers. I have been mentored by successful teachers and feel privileged by the information that has been passed on.  I have learned from every teacher and student I have talked with.  I have built piece by piece a teaching/learning model that I can use for myself.  This model is strongly motivated by Bloom and Marzano and as we continue to communicate I hope that my peers and students take something with them and put it to good use as they produce their own symphonies.
