Hi Sylwia,

During my degree, it was really inspiring when we had visiting artists and industry professionals. This gave us an idea of the real world and the industry, and what we could expect in terms of experience and qualifications. It was even better if it was related to what individuals wanted to do, as it focused our interest on the possibilities open to us on completion of the course.

I agree with the theme of this discussion that it is about making it interesting and relevant to the individual, but it is also about the social learning side, as peers are really influential, even with adult learners (the hardest of the bunch it seems when trying to make them see something in a new light?!) as they can put that added pressure on a student to have a go!
You can't make a student lear…tag:www.classroom20.com,2013-01-17:649749:Comment:9043882013-01-17T21:32:41.931ZDavid Antrobushttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/DavidAntrobus

You can't make a student learn. I think you can only put the conditions in place and show them the way. Motivation is a very emotional and sensitive being and is everchanging. One week the student might be really up for it but the next just not interested. When that spark happens it is really exciting and if there was an easy formula teaching would be a doddle. I think the motivation has to come from within the learner and the factors around it are numerous. The carrot of getting a job…

I think the motivation has to come from within the learner and the factors around it are numerous. The carrot of getting a job doesn't do it for me...to be chained to a 9 to 6 lifestyle continually working isn't a motivating trigger. There has to be more fullfillment involved.
So I think we can! :) if we m…tag:www.classroom20.com,2013-01-15:649749:Comment:9034312013-01-15T22:26:21.230ZSylwia Kramarzhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/SylwiaKramarz

We can't. We can simply provide the platform and a selection of information from which they can pick and choose. And, if that platform is interesting enough, they will want to return... Curiosity is what we have to capture.

Teaching is the physical manifestation of optimism... (and we have to recognise that) otherwise we could become very disappointed.

Hi Sylwia

I agree with Anita it is our job as teachers to make the subject engaging and interesting to all students. I believe that if you are enthusiastic and passionate in the way that you present the subject, learners will pick up on this and in turn share your enthusiasm.

Learning is not something done to students but something students do to themselves. Yes I agree with you Andrea that understanding the students can help with encouraging them and also help students to realise that they must teach themselves with teachears help. As Hannah has said, it is worth talking one- to -one with learners in order to know them better as well as to encourage them to take more responsibility for their learning.

Some mature students want qualifications for a career and this is a long-term goal for them but very often teachers have to deal with older learners who do not see the point of working for qualifications. Without a long term aim for their learning students become demotivated, to avoid this it is important that teachers underline the purposes of learning what they are teaching.
I find that within private one-to-one tutorials students are able to express what their concerns are, what they hope to achieve on the course, their interests and difficulties. This gives the teacher a clearer image of who their students actually are, and hopefully teachers can then adapt their planning to become more inclusive and engaging.
