We are thinking about becoming a 1:1 tablet school.  We have a lot of questions about the possible use of electronic textbooks with our students.  If you have any information or suggestions about the use of electronic textbooks in grades 5 - 12, please share that with me.

Carol,

I hope you will document your experiences both in the early years and what you settle on based on your experiences. How exciting!
I too would be interested. I think California has set an interesting and exciting precedent. I hope someone is able to feedback on how well that initiative is going.
Will the classroom of the future be devoid of paper? We are discussing this in our Literacy Ning community.

DigitalOwl, a Winter Park, Florida-based software company, is one of the first to venture into the fledgling digital textbook market. The company is sponsoring a Florida Digital Textbook Initiative, replacing traditional textbooks at several Florida schools with e-textbooks on laptops and ebook reading devices.

Back in 1995, Joseph Spagnola, superintendent of schools in Illinois, contended that in a world where information can be delivered instantaneously around the globe at the touch of a button, the textbook--as it exists today--is an outmoded artifact of the "factory school."

In 1999, the Texas Board of Education started paving the way for electronic books.
Just playing devil's advocate. Wouldn't textbooks be dead in the future? We are going towards virtual textbooks, opensource textbooks, flatworld knowledge, c-12k.com, etc. Wouldn't textbooks, like the encyclopedia, be rendered obsolete by the vast amount of information on the internet?
Agreed. Where do you get the virtual textbooks? Where can I access open source textbooks? That's exactly what I am looking for.
open source textbook models:
www.flatworldknowledge.com
www.ck12.org

virtual textbook model:
www.smarthistory.org

this is the wave of the future for textbooks i think.
Thanks!
No problem Carol.
I am actually trying to start a social enterprise that gives away free ereaders to students in Hong Kong. Do you know who I can turn to to ask for help on this matter in this forum?
No idea. Sorry
No problem.
I found this resource today

Open Culture
I have just come from 4 years of teaching in a 1:1 laptop school; an early college high school. The experience was wonderful and the 1:1 idea is spreading in the district to the traditional schools. In that environment it is much easier to teach project based learning. Textbooks are not used so much because of the endless online resources. Teachers have to be more creative. It is an invigorating experience for teachers and students. I am now in a new job as instructional technology facilitator helping teachers integrate technology into their curriculum. Textbook companies are adding more and more online features. Pearson has mymathlab
and www.mathxlforschool.com. Another online service is www.learn360.com and there are many more. Good luck.
