A friend of mine is a language teacher, and wants to show off her student work. What would be the best tools for this? She wants as many people as possible to see them.

Let her test out animoto.com which will produce 30 second MTV quality clips for free. Upload your photos (only), use use music or theirs. Receive a finish clip with 20 minutes. Easy to post to Facebook, et.al.
I use Teacher Tube to host video, easy to embed into blog posts, and check out this wiki - http://cogdogroo.wikispaces.com/50+Ways
you can adapt any of these ideas to display student learning. My favourite at the moment is Voicethread as students can add audio comments about their learning very easily.
Animoto will give students and teachers full access accounts for free and I use vimeo to upload students videos and then embed them in my classroom website. I have found that this has very high quality and I haven't found a limit on file size.
