Why would George lie say that Benetha and George were having a "fine" time when Mama asked, but Benetha said that George is a "fool"?

george lied becouse he wanted mama to feel good about him.
George lied to Mama because he wanted her to think he was a good person, and he wanted to leave a good impression.
George lied to Mama for the reason that he wanted to look good in front of Mama. He didnt want to give a bad impression, he just wanted to be on Mama's good side.

Permalink Reply by Eva Mondragon on November 18, 2012 at 6:53pm George is known as a "good boy" by everyone and he doesn't want to give Mama a bad impression. Only Beneatha knows how George really acts when his not around others. Since George likes Beneatha he knows that a bad impression on her mother will not be good and decides to hide what happened by lying and saying things were "fine".
Permalink Reply by Michael M Becton on November 18, 2012 at 7:43pm since mama already thinks that George's a good person , he didn't want mama to make a bad impression on him, he didn't mess up what they had going already and he didn't want her to think he wasn't good for Benetha.
George lied to mama because he wants her to think he's a good person and not tell her the things he says to Beneatha.
Beneatha tells mama he's a fool because he wants to kiss her and be all lovey-dovey when she wants to have a conversation with him, but he doesn't and he gets mad.
George didn't want mama to get the wrong impression of himself, even though he lied and he wanted her to know that so she would see him in a respectful way.
