I designed our elementary school website. This year the teachers' classroom pages have gone behind password protection.

You can check out mine www.cunninghamclassroom.com It is based off of Moodle, an open source project.
Check out the Meriwether Lewis Web site in Portland, OR: http://lewiselementary.org.
I believe the best websites are those that allow a great deal of participation. The easier you can make the site the better. We use a vendor service that provides a "newspaper" like website design. The service is SOCS but I'm sure there are others like it, as well. It uses a correspondent, editor, manager model that allows students, teachers, PTO's, almost anyone you approve contribute content to the site. As with any web 2.0 application, collaboration is the key...I'd highly suggest setting up a website with the ability to, as transparently as possible, allow for multiple collaborators. Good Luck.
P.S. You may view our website at Northeast USD 246
Very nice adaption of a moodle site, William. And Randy, your district is so clean and easy to use. I am presently moving our district to a Joomla site - the old one is at http://msad52.org
