3D multi-player games and virtual worlds: empirical research and case studies

I am currently conducting a literature review and compiling an annotated bibliography on the use of 3D multi-player online games and virtual worlds for collaborative learning. If you are aware of any published reports of *empirical* studies (i.e. containing actual qualitative or quantitative data, as opposed to theoretical/conceptual or position papers) and/or case studies/exemplars of practice in this area, I would be most grateful if you could point me in their direction! So far, most of the papers I have come across have been severely lacking in data, and, unfortunately, have been based largely on rhetoric rather than solid evidence.
I'd be more than happy to collate all responses received and share them with anyone who may be interested.

Cybertypes: Race, Ethnicity, and Identity on the Internet
Deals more with how people develop and craft their online personalities. Talks about how people construct representations of themselves that may often differ from their actual race, gender, age, and orientation. Opportunities & pitfalls. Full of resources, full of comparisons of how these topics are portrayed in the media (the compare & contrast of Snowcrash vs Neuromancer vs The Matrix was jaw dropping).
I think this reading can help sensitize an educator to the powerful forces at play when guiding young people into fashioning personae for themselves. It helped me confront my own preconceptions of gender and race on the internet.
I happen to be reading a fiction book right now, Accelerando by Charles Stross. Goes hand and hand with the questions raised. Haven't finished it, however, so I am not quite ready to reccomend it (though I really dig it so far).

Dr. Appelman has a research group on this subject at Indiana University Bloomington. Columbia U's Teacher's College is involved with a multi-institution collaboration with Microsoft as well. Hope that helps.

Actually, I might be interested in that. I applied to Harvard GSE's TIE Program (home of the lead on River City Project, Dr. Dede), and one of my interests in World Languages (Japanese in particular) and virtual worlds. Thanks for the info.
