Would like to hear from others who are using (or know about others) a microblogging platform such as Yammer / Chatter for internal staff communication. What are teachers / leaders in school using for internal staff communication / calendaring? Thanks :)

Hi All,
I'm looking to expand my Twitter contacts with folks who teach foreign languages. I am following some wonderful teachers who primarily teach French, and would love to add Spanish teachers to the mix to be able to share resources. I'll leave my Twitter user name here & please let me know if there are other resources for me to check out that will help me in my search. http://twitter.com/amor8
My previous post about using the Prologue theme in WordPress to create a private "Twitter" probably got a little mired in technical details for most folks, so I am creating a new one so no one has to wade through technical stuff.
Prologue has many advantages for schools over Twitter. First of all, Prologue gives you more control over access and content of the site. Additionally, your own installation will likely circumvent issues with filters. A Prologue/WordPress installation is also much more likely to pass muster with administrators and the technology powers-that-be. It is certainly very straight forward and easy to use for students.

For school use, one can restrict registration and keep it private--set up so only logged in users can view the blog. I think that it is important that any unmoderated K12 school blog be private. This is done with a plugin and a few settings in the backend. You could also moderate the site, but I think that defeats the purpose of the microblogging interface.

Give it a test run if you like. I set up a WordPress blog with the Prologue theme on my server. Unlike my installation at school, it may be viewed without logging in

Just click here and give it a look. If you like, choose register (right hand column under the tags and links), select a user name. A password will be sent to your email address. If you'd rather message me here, I'll set up an account for you. Once you do that, you can post

I've been intrigued by the potential of Twitter and microblogging in education, yet I have had concerns about security and privacy. Prologue provides a "twitter" or microblogging environment on a WP installation. Since we have WordPressMU on our school's webhost account, it was no big deal to create a new blog to give it a try. We have total control over privacy and access. One can only read, post or comment when logged in and accounts must be created by an administrator.

I created a "Prologue" site for my class and it has really opened my eyes to microblogging. I'm writing about my experiences on my blog.
I just did a search at Twitter.com (search is a relatively new and powerful feature on Twitter) and only found 3 teachers when "classroom20" was set as the search key work. THREE!!!

So, please let's fix this. Including me ... networking is one (of many) of the most exhilarating uses of Twitter

With Twitter you can:
1. network with others and get immediate responses with sharing ideas and resources
2. use Twitter in a zillion ways with your students to advance learning, higher order thinking skills, critical thinking skills, communication skills, creativity skills, etc.)
3. Get SMS cell phone notification from only those "followers" that you give permission to (very useful when working on a special project with a small group of colleagues).

So, here is what we all need to do.

1. Open a twitter account (http://twitter.com) if you yet do not have one (and every person wanting to stay informed and share really should)

2. Be sure to (a.) insert the word classroom20 into your profile bio or (b.) use your classroom20 my page URL in your twitter profile website field (or just http://classroom20.ning.com if you prefer)

Give twitter a day or 2 to index you in their search engines and then VOILA! .. You can enter the key term "classroom20" into the onsite search engine .. then just click "follow" for each person that you want to add to your network.

If you add me (my twitter is "metaweb20" please add me) for example .. then I will receive an email notification ... I use those to see who added me .. and then I usually add them too (if they don't look too weird, hehe).

I use twitter with a large group of edtech and edublogs bloggers and I can assure you that it is a fantastic resource. Many of you here already know this. But, we have had to find each other 1 by 1 by reading blogs and such.

Let's do it. I will run a twitter search in a few more days. It will be interesting to see how many will be there beyond those 3 shown above.
Just wanted to put out an alert that I added the tag category "microblogging" for those who want to discuss Twitter, Jaiku, Tumblr, etc. I expect there will be continuing discussions about them!

OK, I'm sure someone here can enlighten me. Twitter. Not sure I get it.

My questions about Twitter:

1. When I Twitter (is that the right terminology, or should i say "Twit"), who sees it?
2. Exactly what does it mean to be a ‘friend’ on Twitter?
3. How do I subscribe to a friend’s Twitters (again, is it Twit)?
4. Any educational uses?
5. Should Twitter be capitalized, as I have been doing?
