Short Session Description (one line):

Students are empowered to use a multitude of web 2.0 tools and iPad apps to create dynamic, engaging STEM application productions relative to their current learning targets, attaining higher levels of understanding and retention.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

Empower your students create 21st century STEM projects, with the goal of helping close the STE....M Gap. Students reach higher levels of retention and learning when they use science and engineering applications to develop the STEM connections to the algebraic foundations, creating a clear bridge between the mathematical theory/algorithm and the scientific application. Students choose a web tool to serve as the foundation of the project but then embed and upload other web tools to create a dynamic, engaging STEM integration.
The wiki has become a tool that both science and math teachers use to help close this gap, create a bridge of learning between the otherwise isolated subjects, while allowing students to prepare for 21st century learning and living.

Science teachers use these short presentations to help introduce scientific calculations and applications of math and algebra.
Math teachers use these presentations at the end of a learning sequence to show the students how they will be applying these skills to analyze scientific behaviors and outcomes, beyond what the math text offers for the applications.

By encouraging the development of 21st C. presentations, your students will be engaged as 21st C learners and will more clearly understand the relationships between the science & engineering applications and the relative algebraic foundation, improving their fluency between the academics while becoming fluent users of web 2.0 technology tools and resources.

Peg is a 2010 Siemens STEM Fellow who strives to integrate and align mathematics and science learning targets, integrating and connecting algebraic foundations relative to scientific applications. Her students have developed a web page which has become a resource for both math and science teachers from around the world. Because of her students' continued success, Siemens invited Peg back to play an active role as a Siemens STEM Institute team member in 2011. Peg continues to help teachers grow, coaching colleagues K - 12 in 21st C learning, integrating technology effectively through iPads apps, mobile devices, interactive whiteboards, green screen, stop action video, and a host of web 2.0 tools.

At the time the grant was written, the intent was to purchase laptops, as well as wireless usb accounts for our students who could not afford Internet access at home.

Just yesterday I heard that the district was now considering purchasing iPad 2s because we could outfit students through grade 5 (apparently Apple is discounting the iPad 2). I have an iPad 2 and I really love it, but am not sure how good of a resource and tool it will be at the high school level. I pro and conned it last night and have three major concerns:

1) We already use Moodle and have for years, but some of the functionality we use Moodle for will be eliminated on the iPad (document saving and altering)

2) Since it is a discounted iPad, students without Internet will still be without Internet when at home

3) Our state testing is done online. We have a good deal of computers already, but still struggle to get all the testing done. I'm unsure whether an iPad could be used for the upcoming PARCC test

Now that I have said that, I am wondering if any one else is in a high school with all iPads and how they use them. Are there things I am missing that may make some of my concerns go away.
Looking for a good iPad 2 cover for school set of iPads.tag:www.classroom20.com,2012-04-03:649749:Topic:8238262012-04-03T18:12:20.471ZJ Watsonhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/JWatson

Hi all,

As a longtime Macbook/Pro user, I have made good use of Parallels Desktop to run a virtual Windows environment on my Macbook. This has worked well, as QMS is a Windows based environment.

I have recently been debating on what is the next step for computer technology in my classroom. I have been comparing tablets to the nth degree! Based on the fact our school network is Windows based I have been focusing on Windows based tablets from Acer and Asus. Unfortunately, the Asus or Acer do not come with LAN connectivity, thus it is difficult to update the machine and battery life is not that great (3hrs max).

I have considered the iPad2 and have a colleague who enjoys the device. I can see the benefits of this device, but it is extremely limited for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is difficult to access the network at the school for access to storage, etc. Secondly, I enjoy using a stylus. I have found that many of the iPad2 styli are not that great and it is difficult to do fine detail work with these devices. Lastly, I access a number of websites with animations, which are flash based, meaning I cannot access these sites given the relationship with Apple and Adobe.

Much of this research and trials has occurred during the past couple of years. However, with time, technology tends to change (exponentially I hear). My recent travels in the Net have revealed some options that may permit me to have my cake and eat it too, the ultimate hybrid system.

I have noted that Parallels 7 now permits the user to access Windows remotely on mobile devices, this includes iPhone 4 and iPad 2. The user can access Windows via the Internet or directly if two machines are in close proximity. This would potentially enable me to use the iPad 2 and access our school Windows environment, running Office products, Adobe products, etc. I would also be able to access Flash based sites.

My question to you is are any of you using Parallels Desktop 7 on your iPad 2? If so, can you provide feedback as to how efficient it is? I will ask my colleague to download the trial for his iPad 2. When I get feedback, I will be sure to post in this thread.

Lastly, I have also found a stylus that also would be push me towards the iPad. Check out the JOT at ADONIT. This stylus is not expensive and uses a magnet to cling to the iPad versus a clip! it permits fine text to be written, unlike the large nib of most of the other devices I have seen. ADONIT also make a cool keyboard for the iPad.

Parallels and the JOT may actually swing my focus back to the iPad 2 and away to Windows based tablets, as this would mean I could have the best of both worlds as mentioned. When you consider the price point of the iPad versus Windows based tablets, this would seem to be a no brainer.

Thoughts?
